About

Welcome to YewGuitar – a blog first and foremost about learning to play the guitar.
profile
My Name is Tan Yew Wei and I am an avid guitarist. I have been playing since December 2004, and am self-taught in this field. However, I do have 11 years of classical piano training, achieving an ABRSM Grade 7 piano certificate.

Over the last few years of playing guitar and playing with numerous bands, I have experimented in different musical styles from heavy metal to jazz to alternative, and have performed at various school functions. I have also conducted a 5 day beginners guitar course in my high school.

About YewGuitar

A common question which I received was “How do I start playing the guitar?”. At the same time, I always experimented with various learning styles, often in contrary to the ‘traditional’ learning methods my peers went through.

Thus this blog is here to address the issue of learning the guitar. However, there is a great rift between knowing what to do and achieving results doing it, especially when learning to play a musical instrument. Hence, my aim is to bridge this gap with alternative and logical perspectives. Since this blog is about learning the guitar, there will be discussions about the general topic of learning, so its possible that you will find this site useful even if you do not play the guitar.

At the same time, this blog is about exploration. In particular, it aims to explore the vast realm of music produced by the guitar, as well as the technical possibilities of this instrument.

I’m definitely still in my pursuit to the ultimate goal of virtuosity, and am willing to receive or give any feedback. After all, everyone is together on this learning journey. If you do have any comments or questions, feel free to leave a comment or email me via the contact section.
